Atlin Art Centre GuestbookDiane <dr@naturalspas.ca> Nanaimo, BC Canada - Sunday, September 18, 2005 at 15:27:24 (EDT) Hi Gernot and a message to Kate as well. I hope you are both well. It has been so long since I've been to Atlin (1998), yet that summer's beauty and experience remain etched in my heart. I hope to one day return to say hello! Kind wishes, Gene Gene Villeneuve <gene_villeneuve@hotmail.com> France, France - Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 16:30:35 (EDT) Gernot Thank-you for being one of my spirit guides in my life. Memories of Atlin gave me the ability to stand still in a storm of challenges this last year. I celebrated last night with my first art show at the Chilliwack Municipal Hall. Atlin whispers often in my heart. :) Bonnie Jeansonne <bonnie_jeansonne@hotmail.com> Chilliwack, BC Canada - Friday, June 24, 2005 at 11:21:14 (EDT) Atlin is pure magic. Each time I visit Atlin Art Centre, I come home refreshed and renewed. P. Stagg P. Stagg <pstagg@sprint.ca> Toronto, Ontario - Sunday, May 08, 2005 at 20:45:39 (EDT) Attending the workshop at Atlin remains one of the best memories of my life, and has deeply affected my art work. Any New Englanders who are interested in knowing about the experience may email me; I'm writing this because my address in a previous message is no longer up to date. The short answer to any question is: Go if you can to Atlin and immerse yourself in the quiet, the clarity of the air, the purity of the light, dramatic beauty of the natural surroundings. Colene Abramson <colene@fast-email.com> Wayland, MA USA - Tuesday, May 03, 2005 at 10:01:57 (EDT) I've just spent three months as a winter guest at the Atlin Art Centre. For all Atlin alumni who ever wished they could live in Atlin year-round, Gernot's arits's retreat offer is an option worth considering. The weekly or monthly rent is very reasonable. Atlin in the winter is a new opportunity for expereincing nature and one's responses to nature. And the hospitality of Atlin's year-round residents is a precious bonus. I intend to come back next fall. Allan Sheppard <alshep@telusplanet.net> Edmonton, AB Canada - Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at 15:34:51 (EDT) Great site. I really admire your artwork. Your website brings back wonderful memories of the tranquil, sparkling, blue waters of Atlin lake surrounded by snowcapped mountains and the enriching summer program that exposed my inner resources, challenged my fears of change, taught me not to be complacent of the routines of my daily life, and to develop my many faces to become a multi-dimensional person. I look forward to returning to your program to continue my exploration of my inner person and of the natural wonder of the Atlin wilderness! Bye, Jenet Jenet <jenets@bigfoot.com> Vancouver, B.C. Canada - Friday, April 15, 2005 at 00:24:04 (EDT) "The beauty of the natural environment around Atlin defies description. You are guided through this world by a man who deeply loves and respects all of its dimensions - wisdom, balance, richness and hazzards... He helps you discover this world for yourself with every step you take...with his knowledge and experience, expert advice, sensitivity to your struggles, sense of humor, and genuine joy. His passion for the lifestyle he has chosen for himself is truly contagious. Thank you, Gernot, for the Atlin quest and for the gift of sharing yourself." I was there in Atlin in the summer '95...it was full of life and colours. Now it all seems like long ago. I may visit one days soon with my husband. He'd love the wilderness, the school, the art it offers and most of all- the inspiration Atlin has that always triggers hope in every individual who dares to dream to succeed in life and in art in general. Kudos, Gernot! It's been a bit of time since my Atlin experience of 1990 and the spirit still sits with me! Very edifying. I just returned from seeing "Rivers and Tides", a documentary of Andy Goldsworthy's installation work, and I immediately thought of you and that incredible summer in Atlin. I think it's high time to return and recharge my batteries. I hope you are well and still full of passion. I remember you rolling that round boulder back to camp on our Llewellyn Glacier hike...though maybe you do that every year ;} My best to Alan Sirulnikoff, Manjit Mann, Sandra MacGregor, and Florian Ludwig if you happen to connect with them sometime soon. The experiences that I have been privileged to have there--1990 and 1994-- continue to feed my art and life. A highly charged multidimensional experience :) When I smell the poplars here I am in Atlin. Linda Wiebe <joelinda@hurontel.on.ca> Goderich, On Canada - Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at 18:17:44 (EST) My 3 weeks at the Atlin Centre were intense and wonderful. We worked liked dogs then played like puppies. During that time Gernot taught me to open my eyes to the world. Thanks Gernot. Jeff Jeff Rabinovitch Vancouver, BC Canada - Tuesday, December 04, 2001 at 18:21:24 (EST) Hi ya Gernot, Scott here. Just read through your newsletter and have to agree with your observations about September 11. The very fact that I remember the exact date is the only indication I need of it's significance. It is indeed a crazy world and at times I don't understand the logic or lack of it at all. It's times like that that I reflect on my time spent in the Yukon and at the Art Centre, reflect upon a place where violence is an exception to the norm, a rarity in today's society. I will cherish the 3 summers I spent at the centre, as a 'handyman' for the rest of my life. It will remain entrenched in my psyche for all time as a reminder of what our land has to offer before we make the decision to change it. I hope you are well, haven't hit too many rocks in the boat, just joking, and look forward to having a couple of beers next summer! Your friend Scott. Scott Wilson <muskoxman@hotmail.com> Vancouver, B.C. Oh Canada ! - Monday, December 03, 2001 at 20:12:06 (EST) Hello Gernot. Yes I was at the center but not as a paying student but as a builder tree feller and as someone seeking aspiration from the mountains. I have two very strong memories. One was just the enjoyment of working for the sake of work itself not for the end result. That only came to me again when I painted or sculpted. The next was when Gernot and Petoo went to scout out a mountain to climb for a school group. Petoo got up first and then me and Gernot. As I reached the top, my first mountain ever, I looked around and started to cry from the shear overwellming joy of it all and then Gernot and myself hugged each other as good quiet life long friends do. If anyone has an opertunity to go do NOT hesitate. You will not regret your choice. Marko Pashkovsky <markopashkovsky@osc.on.ca> Toronto, Ont. Canada - Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at 12:54:43 (EST) Gernot! It has been more than eight years since my Atlin experience--"Writing on the Edge." As I continue to develop my craft, my Atlin-self emerges to guide my process in quite unexpected but always productive directions. Atlin is truly a lifetime event. I promise to see you again. Jeff Staudacher <hedwig@telus.net> Burnaby, BC CANADA - Wednesday, November 21, 2001 at 01:43:17 (EST) Hi Gernot! Ever since being in Atlin over three years ago, I have not been able to stay away from the beautiful north. My Atlin experiences inspired me to follow through with my dreams to go to school for fine arts, and embrace the wilderness. I have twice now spent my summer in the Yukon, working odd jobs from mushroom picking and salmon fishing, to serving and front desk work. Getting in touch with simpler things in life, like trading in my downtown apartment in Barrie, Ontario, for a tent in the woods. I don't think I could've imagined myself doing these things if I had never had the opportunity to go to Atlin. Truly a life changing experience which I am thankful for! As I wrote this statement I was surprised by how much my Atlin experience kept coming to mind. Up until this very afternoon I thought my Atlin experience was only about making art. Now, however, I see that Gernot, and all the wonderful people I met in Atlin, have helped me communicate why I make art and why I want to teach others about art also. I feel that through my Atlin experince I can help my students get closer to finding their own paths. I also find that everyday I am enriched by my Atlin experience and I getting closer to my own path as well. I am excited to know that these recent Atlin revelations have been hibernating in me for a few months now...I am excited to see how and in what ways my Atlin experince will make itself known to me throughout my life. Thank you again, Gernot! As an "Artist in Residence" I had the very privileged opportunity to expierience the "Atlin High" during August 2001. I have been around quite a bit and have seen many places all over the world, but Atlin is the place to be! I was overwhelmed by the way how Gernot leads the "Idea and the creative process"-workshop and how he guided us to the glacier and up Ruby mountain. What agreat outstanding person! I learned a lot from and through him and I really appreciated the company of the art-students - we were a real good bunch of art-people! Thank you so much, Gernot! The combination of the dramatic and beautiful environment, the outdoor field experiences, the encouragement through disciplined artistic exercises to realize one's personal creative voice, arriving at and working on a concept with deep meaning in our lives, the openness and warmth, and the working environment, the long daylight hours--it was all of a piece, and Magic. I found my own voice in my work for the first time, and that has changed my life. You, and your eye for nature's great beauty came to mind when I recently read the following passage; (this passage is a segment from an essay titled "An Attitude of Gratitude Creates Blessings" by John M. Templeton). In Russell Criddle's story Love Is Not Blind, he describes what it means to be blind and then recover one's sight through an operation..... "Everything looked beautiful. Nothing looked ugly. The wad of paper discarded in the gutter, just the words convey an image of filth, but I saw white and black and colors, straight lines and symmetry, unbelievably different from any other wad of paper in any other gutter.....I felt no great thrill that I was no longer blind, only the awful sense of beauty thrilled me to the limit of my endurance. I hurried into the house and up to my room and buried my head in the pillow. Not because I was no longer blind, not because I could see, but because I just didn't have the capacity to digest so much grandeur. I wept." Your friend, john John Ross <ross@compusmart.ab.ca> Edmonton, AB Canada - Monday, March 19, 2001 at 18:59:39 (EST) Hi Gernot! I hope Atlin is as beautiful as I left. Steve SteveSmith <steve.smith@rocketmail.com> Nashville, US - Thursday, February 22, 2001 at 21:10:24 (EST) It's hard to sum up my time in Atlin. It was so fresh, so unlike anything I had ever experienced. The outdoors, the colors, the forms, the nature, the togetherness with others, the teaching served to remind us constantly of the wealth of our own experience. It was a very special opportunity that Gernot provided for us. Art and life have always been important to me, but Atlin is a constant reminder to me of the unity of these two things for living one's heart.
