Why choose Atlin Centre
when there are other excellent summer programs closer to your home? The journey to Atlin is in itself
a lifetime adventure. When you get to Atlin you will see it was worth the cost and effort of the journey Look
under Location & Travel Information for information on the
Vancouver - Whitehorse - Atlin return trip. You won't find programs of such quality for such a low fee as ours. The Atlin Art Centre
is more than a workshop experience, it is an Art Adventure with a New Perspective. The uniqueness of the workshops
and the approach during the daily process, in combination with the special field trips from our base camp on Spirit Island, make the
Atlin programs an exceptional life experience which no other centre offers.
As you focus on your creative process,
you will hike, canoe, boat, and camp in astonishingly beautiful places with a small party of 9 people and
accompanied by an expert guide and art instructor. Experience majestic mountains,
pristine glaciers, rushing creeks, mystic forests, crystalline alpine lakes,
wildlife and tranquility.
Base Camp
- This program, "Art Adventure in the Wilderness" operates from the Atlin Centre,
a small summer art school located on a plateau on Monarch Mountain.
- From Base Camp, an island in Atlin Lake, you will enjoy the wonderful scenic views of Atlin Lake, renowned for its
spectacular beauty and mountain grandeur. . You can choose to stay on the island instead of the
daily trips we make, and sketch, paint or photgraph the exceptional views from the island.
- All field trips start from Spirit Island and will be guided by Gernot Dick, founder of Atlin Centre and a highly
experienced expedition leader.

Philosophy - "Walking on the Edge"
The location was chosen with a vision in mind. The
spectacular mountain setting and wilderness location of the Atlin Art Centre and the base camp on Spirit Island,
offer inspiration and clarity - giving you
opportunities for uninterrupted focus on what is possible in art and life. The goal of this program is not directed at the
mountains to climb or towards a physical challenge in canoeing. The mountains, the lake, clean air and the sunny climate
are catalysts to enrich your experience and through your experiences, your art and Life.
The programs are based on the belief that art comes from experiencing life at a high level of awareness, from living
with acute senses and from positive risk taking. A person's OWN way of seeing, thinking, feeling, and living
are fundamental elements in the making of art. Each individual is asked to seek out the unexplored
areas of their life and work. Emphasis is therefore placed on exploration and discovery rather than traditional
formal art training. What makes Atlin Art Centre unique and refreshing is its approach "learning from within",
learning through your own daily experiences rather than learning from given information and skill training
which many art schools closer to your home do well.
Our motto, "Walking on the edge" challenges you to live by discovery,
to see how far you can go in your life and art by responding with all your senses to the world around you. Through
this process of art making you will create work which has a fundamental connection to who you are as an
artist in today's world.

Program Descriptions:
For summer 2007, this program is offered just once, therefore please REGISTER EARLY!
10-day Art Adventure in the Wilderness
NO LONGER BEING OFFERED
Arrival day Tues. July 31. Departure day Sat. Aug. 11, or Wed. Aug. 22, 2007
The 10-day art-wilderness workshop offers optional free studio use from August 11, to August 22, for $15 per night for
accommodation. (Maximum of 9 participants)
- If you are interested, you can combine this program with the prior 10-day Atlin Quest
Wilderness program. It is similar in the out-door activity and location, but with somewhat
more demanding hikes (just basic fitness is needed).
This Art Workshop in the Wilderness appeals to creative individuals who are looking
for a fresh start or breakthrough in their work. They range from beginners to intermediate to advanced artists in any
visual arts medium and creative writing. Participants should be ready to go beyond their current ideas, beliefs and perceptions.
Treat yourself to ten days of creative exploration in a stunning lake and glacial mountain
landscape. In this region in early August, the dry climate is ideal to be outdoors, the air is
alive with possibility. The conditions are ideal for tuning your senses and awakening your
creative powers.
During the daily sketching trips we camp for 7 days on Spirit Island. From
there we explore on daily trips alpine meadows, islands, small island
lakes and experience a glacier walk.
The area is still largely untouched by human activity, and filled with mystery
and wildlife. The chance that you will have to share the beauty and
solitude of our destination with other travelers is very slim. The
experience of being in the midst of such solitude will be with you for
a long time. Because of our exceptional location, the 10-day Art Adventure offers
a combination of different outdoor activities, unlike most
other programs which revolve around only one activity.
This workshop offers a unique combination of experiences designed to unlock creative
potential through painting, sculpting, photography and writing and outdoor experiences
designed to sharpen your senses and attune you to the subtle forces of the northern
wilderness. Those long summer days leave plenty of time to be on your own exploring on Spirit Island,
or immersing yourself in creative projects.
No previous experience is necessary. All skill levels will be accommodated. Both The indoor
and outdoor activities will be customized to the needs and interests of the group. Such flexibility
is possible because the teaching is done on a one-to-one basis; each participant can
follow his/her priority/direction or daily aspiration. This method supports every
participant whether their approach to art is traditional, abstract or conceptual.
Some Highlights in the Program:
-
Creative Exploration and Development
Explore with various natural materials or paint, draw, photograph, design, whatever is most
suitable to test your ideas - the choice is yours. The instructor acts as catalysts to assist
with any idea, medium or technique you choose to explore. All skill levels will
be accommodated.
-
Critiques
In addition to the one-to-one teaching process, the evening critiques at the camp site are a daily opportunity to share your
experiences and achievements with the group and Gernot. These informal critiques will add
further insights and stimulate lively discussions among participants. They will illustrate ways in which to
strengthen the visual statement of your art and clarify the connection between your art and your everyday life,
helping you to create work which speaks beyond the self.
