Atlin is a small gold rush town in the most beautiful part of northwestern British Columbia, close to the
Yukon and Alaska. Relics from gold rush days abound.
The village of approximately 500 people has a school, library, museum, two grocery stores, a
hardware/general store, gas station, restaurants, three churches, ATM, gift shops, a theater, a
baseball diamond and a curling track. Atlin Heli-Skiing draws skiers from around the world as it
guaranties powder snow from January through April. Cross-country skiing into the winter wilderness
is exceptional.
A 3000-foot airstrip, capable of handling Lear jets and 737s, is equipped for night landings.
Local trades (for construction and home repair), contractors and equipment rentals are available in
Atlin. Hourly rates are very reasonable. Additional services and specialty shopping can be found in
Whitehorse. (For a more complete list of Atlin services, please
visit http://www.Atlin.net.)
In July, the Atlin Arts and Music Festival brings a weekend of culture and fun to the village. Later in the summer,
the Four Crown Quest combines a wilderness triathlon with a salmon BBQ. In the winter, there is a glacier
climb for snowmobiles, the very popular Teresa Island Quest for cross-country skiers, and the March
Fun Days' Winter Carnival for the whole family.
Atlin is an ideal base for wilderness hiking and camping, canoeing and kayaking, glacier walks, fishing, boating,
climbing, heli-skiing, heli-boarding, kite skiing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, glacier flights, dog-sledding,
skating, curling - even panning for gold.
Juneau, Alaska, is a short, scenic flight over the nearby Llewellyn Glacier. Skagway can be reached by car over
the historic White Pass. Dawson City is another popular destination. The great northern parks, Denali,
Nahanni and Kluane, are conveniently close, while Atlin Provincial Park, one of the most pristine parks
in the world, surrounds the southern half of Atlin Lake.
Atlin summers are beautifully warm and dry, and not attractive to mosquitoes. Long days extend outdoor
activities well into the night. During the month of June, the sun sets close to midnight and twilight lasts through to
dawn.
Winter brings the Northern Lights and long, memorable sunrises and sunsets. Even the weeks in December offer over
7 hours of daylight.
